DANCE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Absolute Beginner Ballet | Sundays 9:30-11:00am
Dancewave’s Absolute Beginner Ballet is for the novice dancer with little to no previous experience, in a welcoming and encouraging environment. Students will learn the basic positions, body alignment terminology, and short routines to jazz and contemporary music. Taught by Mary Simone Burns
Hip Hop | Mondays 6:30-7:30pm ○ Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm
Hip Hop is an energetic and fun class for beginner-level dancers. Learn basic steps, rhythms, musicality and phrasing and choreography to popular hip hop music. This class is a fun way to increase confidence through movement. Taught by Von Black (Monday) and Coel (Wendesday)
Beginner Modern | Sundays 12:00-1:30pm
Class is a highly imaginative and highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers. Class begins with a sensation-based warm up where we ground ourselves through improvisation and set material. We will learn some basics of modern technique and cultivate skills, strength and curiosity through floor, standing exercises and across the floor sequences. Class culminates in a full bodied athletic dance phrase that challenges us physically and creatively as dance artists. Suitable for the absolute beginner to dance and/or modern dance, this class is open to all interested in moving. Taught by Marion Spencer
Open-Level Modern | Tuesdays 7:30-9:00pm
Class is a highly imaginative and highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers. Class begins with a sensation-based warm up where we ground ourselves through improvisation and set material. We will work on building our technique and cultivating our curiosity through floor, standing exercises and across the floor sequences. Class culminates in a full bodied athletic dance phrase that challenges us physically and creatively as dance artists. Suitable for a beginner but more geared towards a person with some dance class experience, this class is open to all interested in being pushed physically and creatively and working to dig deeper in their dancing. Modern Dance Company | Tuesdays 9:00-9:30pm (Fall and Spring trimesters only)
The Modern Dance Company is for adults at all dance levels, providing performance opportunities at various NYC venues throughout the year. Rehearsals incorporate and develop themes from the Modern dance classes, while members work creatively as a collective to produce dance works for performance. Through this process dancers are introduced to an understanding of choreography through guided tasks and choreographic direction. Dancers who attend either the beginning modern or open level modern are encouraged and welcomed to join the Company. Taught by Mario Spencer
Soca | Thursdays 7:30-8:30pm
Soca is an upbeat and fun Caribbean and Carnival based dance class. Students will burn calories and learn techniques, including wining, for a total body workout. Taught by Kameica Reid
FITNESS CLASSES
Barre Vida | Tuesdays 6:30-7:30pm
Barre Vida is a total body workout open to people of all fitness levels. It is a low cardio and intense toning class that works to elongate the muscles while burning fat. The class utilizes the use of the ballet barre, small hand weights, and other props to improve posture, give muscle definition, increase flexibility, and encourage weight loss. Each class is choreographed to a specific playlist to help motivate and give that extra musical push. Barre fitness targets the smaller muscles that often get lost in regular cardio or boot camp classes such as the oblique muscles, transverse abdominals, triceps, inner thighs, and gluteus. Essentrics® | Fridays 9:00-10:00am
Essentrics is a full body workout that rapidly changes the shape of your body through a dynamic combination of strengthening and stretching. The technique develops lean, strong and flexible muscles with immediate changes to your posture. Perfect for people of all fitness levels, this program rebalances the body, prevents and treats injuries and unlocks tight joints. With a diverse music playlist accompanying each routine, this equipment-free workout leaves you feeling energized, youthful and healthy. Taught by Diane Jacobowitz
Pilates | Fridays 10:00-11:00am
Pilates is an exercise method that builds strength, flexibility and endurance through low impact movements. Pilates emphasizes proper postural alignment, core strength and balance to help you feel lean and grounded. Taught by Saya Baker
Zumba® | Sundays 11:00am-12:00pm ○ Mondays 7:30-8:30pm
Zumba classes feature Latin rhythms set to high-energy international beats. Before you know it, you’ll be getting fit and will feel your energy levels soaring! There’s no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness Party. It’s easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating, often building a deep-rooted community among returning students. Taught by Kuni Quimby (Sunday) and LaWanda Hopkins (Monday)
